Skagway & White Pass

Journal

Chilkat Fast Ferry (Skagway-Haines)
Okay, so this turned out to be the really touristy part of the trip. And the photos (they're around here somewhere) are like a million other vacation shots, full of other tourists taking photos with me in them. The view from White Pass back down to Skagway is spectacular and I'll always be a sucker for that front of the same train as it's going around the bend shot.

The Mounties required the Yukon gold rushers to drag a ton of stuff with them up this mountain pass. "Nobody gets into Canada without stuff!" It's hard to imagine how tough that was now that the day hikers seem to be walking faster than the tourist train.

Anyway, I'd recommend this trip (once). Better yet, push on to the end of the line, transfer to a bus on the Al-Can Highway to Fairbanks, take the train down through Denali to Anchorage, and complete the circle with a small floatplane trip back to the Panhandle (Alaska, not T*x#@s). Someday...

  • Wednesday afternoon 9/5 departed Juneau on ferry Kennicott to Skagway, arrived 11PM.
  • Stayed Wednesday through Friday at Wind Valley Lodge.

  • Thursday afternoon trip on White Pass RR. A three hour tour...

      • Touristy Skagway: "Gold Pan Theatre, home of melodramas, a sarsaparilla bar and Victorian parlor."
      • Friday, change of plans. Bored with Skagway. Took smaller Ferry to Haines. Rough seas. Sick most of short trip.
      • Stayed at "Victorian" (run down) Hotel Halsingland at Fort Seward.
